Is technology helping or hurting the modern day relationship?
Up until when the cell phones became normalized in the early 2000’s, you had to call someone’s house phone to ask them on a date with risk of having another family member answer. It took bravery back then to ask someone on a date.
In addition to cell phones, the internet was not mainstream. Before this time, you couldn’t use online dating to find that special someone. You couldn’t text someone or message them on a dating site. You had to actually approach them in person. Both men and women had to put themselves out there when it came to asking someone on a date. There was the fear of in person rejection rather than being rejected online.
Times have definitely changed. But is technology helping or hurting the modern-day relationship?
There are many points to consider. First, let us consider the benefits of using technology while dating:
- Technology is great for long distance relationships.
If you aren’t able to see your significant other for an extended period of time, it is a way to connect with them and see what they are up to. You can facetime, text or catch up with them on social media. This can be beneficial to keeping your relationship going.
2. Texting is a great way for a significant other to know that you are thinking of them when you are at work or not with them. A quick “Good Morning” Or “I miss you” text can make all the difference in a relationship.
3. Online dating has become very popular in this day and age. You can connect with someone at the click of a button. From online messaging to meeting in person, you can meet so many different people you never would have met by just going to your local bar.
4. Social media can also connect you with people from school or your past that you haven’t spoken to in years. It gives you a chance to reconnect with past flames and old friends that could become more.
Let us now review the downsides to using technology in relationships:
1. It’s easy for text messages to be misconstrued. Miscommunication or misunderstanding via text can cause arguments in relationships.
2. Social media gives access to so many people you may not have spoken to in years. This gives people in a relationship easy access to the opposite sex online, making it easier to cheat on their significant other. Dating applications also play a role here.
3. Technology can be distracting in a relationship. Between smartphones, TV’s, laptops, and tablets, couples rarely spend actual time together. Couples may be physically out on a date together but mentally be on their phones the whole date.
