Don’t Let Your Scale Weigh You Down

Weight-It’s something that nobody really wants to talk about and for good reason. You could be doing everything you possibly can to gain or lose it but your scale says otherwise. The scale is a scary place for most of us. And I’m here to tell you that you can’t let it weigh you down.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am trying to lose weight and I do weigh myself once or twice a month just to gauge where I’m at in my journey. Sometimes, I like what the scale says. And other times, it upsets me. The thing about weight is that it fluctuates between 1 to 5 lbs everyday. And if you are a woman, then you also have to take into consideration the week of your period where bloating occurs. No matter what you are eating and how much you exercise, your body weight will fluctuate everyday anyway.

I am on a health journey and I’m learning what foods are good for me and I’m trying to choose those foods more often. I’m also keeping active. But I can’t (and you can’t) let the scale bring me (you) down. If you know that you are doing what is right for your body, then who cares what the scale says?

Now of course if you step on the scale and it tells you that you have gained 50lbs in the past few months, then maybe you need to use that scale to open your eyes to a healthier lifestyle. The scale can definitely be used as a wake up call. I know it has served that purpose for me before. But we can’t always harp on that number. We can’t be weighing ourselves daily. That can’t possibly be healthy.

No matter what shape or size you are, embrace your body and love your body. And if you feel you need to make changes to your lifestyle to lose or gain weight, do it. But don’t do it because the media told you to. Do it for yourself. We can’t listen to those magazines or online articles saying that celebrities are too fat or too skinny. We are all real people with real bodies. We need to embrace the bodies that we were born with. If you are on a journey and you feel good about the changes you have made or are currently making in your life, then it doesn’t matter what that scale says.

You don’t necessarily need a scale to tell you if you’ve gained or lost weight. I’ve been on a journey to a healthier lifestyle. I know I’ve felt more energetic over the past few months. I’ve also noticed my waist getting smaller and my clothes fitting looser. These are the indicators that I’m losing weight.

Personally, I like to hop on the scale every other week or so just to see where I’m at. But I try not to let it impact my mood. Because regardless, I know I’m making those healthy changes. And I also know that my body weight fluctuates everyday and that’s okay.

The point is, if the scale upsets you, don’t use it. If you know you are making the changes you need then you are good. And if you don’t know what those changes should be, please consult a doctor or a dietitian. This is in no way a recommendation for any of you to lose or gain weight. You have to do what you feel is right for you and your body. All bodies are beautiful. No matter what, remember to love your body and yourself.
