The Game

Growing up, I wasn’t the most athletic. Sure I did a few years of ballet, tap dance, basketball and bowling but it was never something I needed in my life. To be honest, for a long time I saw sports as a way for people to ignore their spouses. “Honey I’m watching the game, so I can’t talk right now.”

But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that there are positives to watching and or playing sports. Yes, today I’m talking about sports. Yes, me. I know it’s crazy, right? Bet you never thought you would see the day. Now let me preface this by saying that I know the bare minimum about sports in general. So if you’ve come here for expert advice, you should probably leave..

  1. Something to Discuss

Now whether you are at work, school, a party, or anywhere really you may hear people talking about whatever game happened last night. Whether it’s basketball, hockey, football, baseball, etc. this is a great go to topic for social occasions. If you are trying to network or you just want to bond with your coworkers, discussing this will always be a fail safe. If you just briefly watch the game and remember the score, you would be fine just talking about that. And who knows, the game could be a really good one that you are glad you watched anyway.

  1. Something to Look Forward To

Since dating Erich, I’ve noticed how excited he and his family get about football season. Now I’ve always loved the Fall season but seeing Erich’s excitement for the football games make the season even better. We plan gatherings with his family to watch the games on Sundays and eat some great food. It’s something fun to look forward to every week. Another plus is that in football, the team usually only plays once a week, it’s easier to keep up with than other sports.

  1. Bringing People Together

In addition to being fun and exciting, sports also bring people together. Playing sports is really great for building teamwork. All the players rely on each other to win the game. It’s also a great way for people to make friends.

Watching the games can also bring people together. It can be a common interest that you have with your friends and family. You can have gatherings to watch the games or even go to a game in person if you are fortunate enough to afford it (some of these games are expensive to go to). I find going to games in person more exciting but I think that’s just because I like cheering with the crowd.

  1. Workout

No matter what sport you are playing, typically you are burning calories during. Playing sports gets you moving around instead of sitting on your couch all day. With the obesity rates skyrocketing in America, joining sports teams is a great idea for both kids and adults. If you find a sport that you enjoy playing, you should join that team. It doesn’t matter what your age is. They have recreational teams for both kids and adults. You just have to do a quick google to see what they have in your area.

Even though I’m no expert on sports, I appreciate the happiness and excitement that watching and playing these games brings to others. Now Fantasy football is a whole other concept in itself.. so let’s save that for next time. All and all, I would like to say happy football season to all the fans out there who celebrate. Oh and GO BIRDS…
