Go at Your Own Pace

Growing up, it was drilled into our heads that you do the following: go to primary school, go to college, a tech school or work full time. Then once you graduate you get a full time job, move out into an apartment or a house. After that, you meet someone special, fall in love, and get married. Then you get pets and have kids. These were the steps of life that people expected to accomplish in order. But over the past few years, I’ve come to realize that everyone is doing things at their own pace and in a different order. Or people don’t want to do some of these things in their lives at all.

So much of our lives fall into a routine. Following these life steps in order was something our parents or grandparents did. But times have most definitely changed. I know people that bought houses on their own, people that are still living at home so that they can save money, people that aren’t married but live together (Erich and I for example). There’s also single parents, people who don’t want kids at all. The point is that despite what has been ingrained into our brains, there is no set order or way to live your life. You don’t have to do exactly what you think everyone else is doing.

Here’s an example:

Erich and I got engaged about 6 months ago. But honestly, we haven’t really started planning the wedding yet. Now a lot of people may say that we need to get on booking a venue because those book up at least 1 year out. And to that I say, that’s okay. We are taking our time and we want to enjoy the process. Everybody goes at their own pace and there is nothing wrong with that.

Don’t feel bad about doing things “out of order.” It’s your life. It’s a unique journey which should be celebrated instead of judged. So get a pet on your own, be single as long as you want, have a long engagement, save money living at home. Do what makes you happy. Times have changed and the normal from 20 years ago should no longer be considered normal. Live your life in whatever order you desire.
